melancholia is without doubt, beautifully filmed - the soundtrack is extremely dramatic and powerful too. i found the storyline very slow at times, especially throughout the wedding scenes - but it was captivating within the last 40 minutes. i thought both charlotte gainsbourg and kirsten dunst performed incredibly.
cry baby (1990)
i've wanted to watch this cult musical movie for ages now, and i finally got round to it whilst driving home from uni last week. it's refreshing to see a young depp challenging himself by creating a much more light hearted comedy film. the acting and dialogue is incredibly cheesy and very tongue in cheek (literally!) but you cant deny the amazing costumes and styling of each character. the songs in the movie are ridiculously catching, especially 'please mr, jailor' - i've found myself singing it all week. you can see why wade 'cry baby' walker is such an iconic and cool character.
zeitgeist (2007)
the best conspiracy theory i've ever seen focusing on everything from religion, politics, governments, terrorism, basically life itself. watch it, it's mind blowing.
anchorman: the legend of ron burgundy (2004)
i basically watched this because everyone kept telling me i had too. i agree that it is funny and entertaining.. but i dont' get the massive hype around it. i suppose it has become quite a cult film in itself, for it's daft one liners, silly storyline and the sheer volume of huge actors featuresd. i have to give it to will ferrell, steve carell and paul rudd though, they were definitely my favourites.
district 9 (2009)
i watched this by chance when i saw it on the TV, and it's not a film i'd usually go for. however, i'm so glad i sat down to watch it. it's an amazing film which leaves you begging for a sequel.
set in south africa, the narrative of film shows an defeated alien race who are forced to live in slum like conditions after their mothership broke down over the city of Johannesburg. unrest forms between the humans and aliens as they are referred to as "prawns" and confined to a district who are now being evicted to another area. two aliens use alien technology to distill a 'fluid' in which they hope to save their mothership and get home, but the fluid is seized by Wikus, a member the human military organisation MNU, who accidentally sprays some in his face. the film goes on to unfold the sequence of events leading on from what the 'fluid' does to Wikus and the 'prawns'.
these posts contain a list and short bio of 5 films that i've most recently viewed. they include films that have been on my 'to watch' list for years, have been recommended to me, have been recently released or are on the list of films for my university project! i try not to include spoilers in my descriptions - just a brief synopsis, the genre and my general opinion. |
Kirsten Dunst is my biggest girl crush.
