focus | photography book 'ballet by henry leutwyler'
ballet is by far one of the most beautiful photographic publications i have ever laid eyes on. i discovered this book through by falling in love with one photograph i'd seen online....
the photograph of the ballerina on pointe in the silhouette of the pink stage light .. warming up in the wing of the stage, she was facing away from the camera as if about to head out to perform. (last image)
i was determined to find creator. after what felt like a lifetime of searching i finally found the photographer and his website - showing a few images from the ballet series. i noticed he has also produced a publication of many many more images - i made it my mission to get hold of it... but at a hefty £700 price tag - i made use of the library facilities at university to order it in for me especially.
i only have the book in my possession for a month. so i had to share my favourite images and spreads with all of you before this amazing piece of work leaves my bookshelf.
henry was the first photographer granted backstage access to the New York City Ballet company, capturing ballet from the much more interesting 'behind-the-stage' viewpoint. costume, pain, drama, make up, glitter, movement, lighting, intensity, strength, balance, life and craftsmanship captured beautifully in every image, blurred or in perfect detail.

This is so beautiful maaaaan. The photo of the bare foot on pointe is crazy.. Wish I had this available to have a look through! I completely feel your pain with finding books but discovering they're horrendously expensive!! x
