film 10

the diving bell and the butterfly (2007)

a beautifully shot, directed and approached film from the true story of the editor of the french magazine 'elle' jean-dominique bauby. he suffers an awful stroke and has to live with an almost totally paralyzed body; only his left eye isn't paralyzed. his mind, memories and imagination are still fully functioning and learns to deal with his 'locked-in' condition and learns a new way of comunication.

donnie darko (2001)

i'd been meaning to watch this movie for a long time, and frankly... i need to watch it again. it's one of those films where if the ending hasn't been spoilt for you already you may have to watch more than once to understand, i know i do - just to piece everything together. jake and maggie are effortless, as they should be playing siblings! the film is dark and you can understand why it's become such a cult teen angst movie. it also features drew barrymore, who i wish had a bigger part!

looper (2012)

looper's pace and structure runs similarly to chrisopher nolan's inception, so it was an obvious choice for me as i love anything with non-linear narrative and futuristic elements combined with amaxing male actors. joseph gordon levitt doesn't dissapoint, nor does emily blunt. gorgeous little pierce gagnon plays cid amazingly well, that little boy has an amazing future ahead of him - i was astounded by his execution of one of the most significant roles in the movie. this film is beautifully shot, each frame could be a stand alone photograph in an exhibition somewhere, the little details are brilliant.

the impossible (2012)

i was ridiculously nervous before i watched this film, because we were warned about it by the cinema staff before purchasing the tickets, due to it's harrowing, gorey and disturbing scenes. it definitely isn't a film for the faint hearted, my housemate cried the entirety of the film and i found parts too graphic to watch or listen too. it's based on a true story of a family caught in the 2004 tsunami natural disaster, the impossible is insanely intense and honest. again, the cinematography is beautiful but the plot is very predictable.

pitch perfect (2012)

i cannot get these songs out of my head, i've been singing the acapella numbers for the last two weeks! the soundtrack is overtly cheesy but so so catchy, comedy in all the right places with a classic teen blockbuster narrative. what more could you want from a truly feel good, glee style movie. rebel wilson is amazing, as is skylar astin.
